January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Early detection of cancerous cells is one of the best ways to prevent many forms of cancer from progressing to later, generally more difficult to treat, stages - thus resulting in higher treatment success rates. Cervical cancer is no exception to this notion, with the month of January being dedicated to raising awareness for this type of cancer and preventative screenings that exist.

According to the American Association for Cancer Research, cervical cancer is a disease in which cancer cells arise in the cervix, which connects the uterus to the vagina. Around 14,500 women in the U.S. are diagnosed each year, with more than 4,000 deaths occurring on an annual basis, according to the National Cancer Institute.

In addition to vaccinations, pap test screenings are one of the best preventative screening tools available to detect cervical cancer in early or precancerous stages. As part of this screening, cells from the cervix are examined for any abnormalities that may be present.
