It's that time of year again - flu season is approaching! The flu generally spreads between October and May each year in the United States, with many individuals opting to receive a flu vaccine in September or October in order to be protected for the whole season.
The CDC recommends every person 6 months and older get a flu shot, every year. Depending on their age, some children may need to receive two doses of the flu vaccine during one flu season, but everyone else only needs to receive one dose of the flu vaccine during a single season. Your health care provider can offer more information and help you determine the best time to receive your flu vaccination - depending on your age, allergies, and any other pre-existing conditions.
Even if this year's vaccine doesn't exactly match the most prominent flu viruses that may be circulating during the upcoming flu season, it may still provide some protection and help prevent further illness-related health complications.
It takes about two weeks for protection to develop after flu vaccination, and you can receive your vaccine close to home! MCMC offers flu vaccines in the clinic throughout the flu season from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Call ahead to (507) 836-6111 to schedule a nurse appointment to receive your vaccine today! Uninsured/self-pay patients must pay at time of service ($60 for high dose and $25 for regular dose vaccine).
