One of the best forms of protection against the flu is to get a flu shot every year. Most people get the flu vaccine in September or October in order to be protected throughout the entirety of flu season.
Why Get a Flu Shot Yearly?
Influenza A and Influenza B are the most common causes of flu in humans. They both have many strains that are constantly changing to disguise themselves from our immune system. This is why even if you've been exposed to one strain of flu, it won't necessarily protect you from other strains. Your immune system may not even recognize it to begin with if it has mutated enough. The flu vaccine is developed each year specific to the strains believed to have the highest exposure rates.
How Effective is the Flu Vaccine?
While no vaccine is perfect, the standard flu vaccine is 40-60% effective most years. Even if you do contract the flu virus, your symptoms are likely to be much less severe if you've been vaccinated.
Who Should Be Vaccinated?
The CDC recommends every person 6 months and older should receive a flu shot, with some exceptions in special cases. The type of vaccine that's right for you depends on your age, allergies, coexisting illnesses, and more. Talk with your provider for more information.
Where Can I Get the Flu Vaccine?
Murray County Medical Center offers flu vaccines in their clinic throughout flu season. Walk-Ins are welcome, but you can also schedule a nurse appointment for Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm. We don't give vaccines over the noon hour.
